But for you, be different!

I am reading a great book titled Against the Wind by K.P. Yohannan.  The book is a call to higher character - the character that Paul exhorted Timothy to demonstrate.

Paul recognized that it is easy to become distracted from one’s God-given mission and become as the world so he calls Timothy to rise above it… “But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.” 2 Tim 3:14.

The Lord tells us but for you, be different!  Will you choose to be different?

Is your wife, sister, or best friend hurting?

This past Sunday, as Christians celebrated Easter, I was reminded of our great need for Jesus.  I think of all of the hurting women (and men for that matter) that I know and am in wonder that more of us do not seek out an answer to our suffering.  I suppose we do, though, on the counselor’s couch, at the pharmacy, cutting, or at the local bar.  I know this because those are some of the places I sought “help” and refuge for my hurting heart – the pain and suffering experienced due to loss, abuse, divorce, death, depression, anger…

I think back to those times and am thankful that all of that pain lead to multiple attempts to resolve my hurt and finally lead me to a person who loved me right where I was at and shared her faith with me because she had the light of Jesus shining in her.

Do you know somone who is suffering – your wife?  Your friend? Your sister?  If you do and you’ve tried everything to help don’t give up!  There is hope!  Go to www.healinghearts.org to provide one last way – the everlasting way – to reach out to the person you love.

Oprah, Course on “New Age” Christ

Oprah Winfrey will be letting out all the stops on her XM Satellite Radio program this coming year. “Oprah & Friends” will offer a year-long course on the New Age teachings of A Course in Miracles. A lesson a day throughout the year will completely cover the 365 lessons from the Coursein Miracles “Workbook.”  For example, Lesson 61 tells each person to repeat the affirmation “I am the light of the world.” Lesson 70 teaches the student to say and believe “My salvation comes from me.”

The truth is this – not only are we not the light – our hearts are deceitful beyond measure. Jesus is the only light of the world and our salvation is only possible through Him.  He tells us if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  Only His forgiveness allows us to walk in freedom.

Be cautious friends.  The answers to our hurting hearts, our pain and suffering, and the path to joy can only be found in one place and person – the Bible and Jesus.

In Him –

Help for hurting moms and children…

At the moment, I am shaking my head as the prick of newly-formed tears sting my eyes.  I just read part of a story (I couldn’t finish it) about a young, pregnant mother.  Out of desperate frustration I’m sure, she stopped at a car wash, took her young, toddler-aged daughter out of the car and pressure washed the child because she had wet her pants in the back seat of the car.  The car wash attendant witnessed the incident, though did not step in.  However, she was moved enough to turn the security tape in to police who are considering pressing charges against the mother.

This story makes my stomach hurt with sorrow – for that poor toddler who is being treated in such a way.  Having grown up in a stressful home environment, I know what it is like to have a mother constantly on the edge, anger brewing right near the surface.  I lived in fear of that anger and was, at times, subject to inappropriate treatment too.

This story also makes me hurt for that mother.  Does she know the impact of her behavior on her child?  Does she have a network of people to support her?  Is anyone walking alongside her to teach her how to parent?  Was she, as a child or is she now as an adult, being subject to abuse herself?  The answer to these questions are unknown, but my guess is she is hurting, stressed, and without much support.

Oh, how this young woman needs Jesus!  To know His forgiveness, grace and peace….to live in freedom from the bondage of her past, anger, and abuse….to become the woman God wants her to be – a loving mother, a woman of the Word, a friend to other hurting women. I hope you will join me in prayer – that God would reach this woman in a mighty way, and that she would come to know Jesus – the Lover of Her Soul, her Healer.

The Hurting in Hollywood

As I watch and read the news on-line, I am amazed at how much hurtful, instrusive fodder is focused on many of the struggling young women in Hollywood.  Rather than seeing these women such as Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, and the Olsen twins as fodder for the latest story, our hearts should hurt for them as they struggle with so many difficult things.  Perhaps they have a history like so many of us – filled with suffering, abuse, the pain of abortion, divorce, or a number of other hurts.  No matter their history, they NEED JESUS just like the rest of us.  As a Christian community let’s agree to pray for them – for their salvation, peace of mind, and the healing only Jesus can bring.  In His Name.  Sue
